Nepal detected Omicron’s BA.5 sub-variant
Kathmandu: In Nepal, a new sub-variant of the COVID-19 Omicron variant has been discovered.
The presence of the BA.5 sub-varient was revealed by gene sequencing conducted at a lab at Kavrepalanchowk-based Dhulikhel Hospital, according to Dr. Chumanlal Das, director of the Epidemiology and Infectious Disease Control Division.
As he mentioned, the Division is working to identify the virus’ carrier while also conducting additional research on it.
Prior to this, the SARS-CoV-2 BA.2 Omicron variant was discovered, and the National Public Health Laboratory, Teku is now sequencing the genes from an infected sample.
\In the meantime, the nation’s COVID-19 infection rate is gradually rising.
