Xiaomi: Mi’s growing market in Nepal
History and Background
Formed in 2010, it launched its first smartphone in 2011; the Xiaomi Mi 1. Putting out phones under its own name as well as numerous sub-brands, including Redmi, Black Shark and Pocophone, we’ve almost definitely heard of its devices. It now has a huge global market share, since 2018, Xiaomi has been making waves in the West as well.
The Redmi series appeared in 2013, followed by the Pocophone in 2018. The Black Shark gaming phone sub-brand began in the same year, and while both Xiaomi and Black Shark are technically owned by the same company i.e. Xiaomi, both brands downplay the link.
Xiaomi started selling its phones in Australia in 2014 and in the United Kingdom in 2018. The company sells some smart home products in the US, but no smartphones.
Xiaomi in Nepal
Xiaomi and its subsidiary Redmi sell low-cost to high-end phones in Nepal, where they can have a large market share. Every year, the brand introduces multiple devices in Nepal, making it difficult for buyers to choose one, let alone explore the web for details.
In Nepal, Xiaomi gadgets are distributed by two companies. Teletalk Pvt. Ltd. is one, while Vatsal Impex is the other. Outside of Kathmandu Valley, Teletalk distributes Xiaomi products through offline outlets and an online store via Sastodeal. Vatsal, on the other hand, sells products to people in Kathmandu Valley through both retail and online channels.
