Kathmandu : Brazil on Tuesday reported 3,251 deaths in the past 24 hours, setting a new national record for daily COVID-19 deaths and bringing its nationwide death toll to 298,676.

According to the daily report from its health ministry, the previous record of daily COVID-19 deaths was 2,841 on March 16.

Meanwhile, the South American country also recorded 82,493 new infections in the last day, raising the national count to 12,130,019.

Since January, Brazil has been experiencing a new wave of the outbreak, which has resulted in the near collapse of the health system in practically all the country’s states, forcing several municipalities and states to tighten restrictive measures to contain the virus.

Six states are currently in a critical situation for lack of oxygen, while 10 others are in a state of alert for the same reason, the health ministry said. Brazil is one of the countries hardest hit by the virus worldwide in terms of both deaths and cases, second only to the United States.
