Myanmar begins general strike in face of military threats
Kathmandu : A nationwide general strike has been called today (Monday) in protest of the military coup in Myanmar.
Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Saturday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck.
Demonstrations against the military coup have been going on for two weeks in Myanmar. To make the general strike a success, the protesters have urged the citizens to participate in the demonstration. It is said that many private sector as well as government employees have joined the strike.
Security has been tightened in Myanmar. Authorities opposed the protest with all available police forces, special services and the army. “
The atmosphere in Myanmar has been tense since the military seized power. Citizens are protesting in the streets. Protests erupted after Myanmar’s military cracked down on leaders, including Democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
