If you are fond of philosophy you must have heard the name of Socrates, one of the greatest philosophers in human history. He is considered one of the founders of western philosophy.

He was a man ahead of his time. He believed that people need to make decisions based on knowledge, virtue and logic rather than theological doctrine of the contemporary time. His progressive perception was considered as a threat to long lived, conventional belief of people. Hence, he was imprisoned and sentenced to death and forced to drink poison called Hemlock.

The surprising part is that he hasn’t penned down his thoughts and writings. Therefore, his philosophies, thoughts, ideologies and even information about his life available in the world today are obtained from secondary sources. Plato, Socrates student, is credited for expanding Socratic ideology.

Here are some highly appreciated quotations from Socrates that will help you change your perception about life and living:

The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.

There is only one good, knowledge and one evil, ignorance.

The unexamined life is not worth living.

It is better to change an opinion than to persist in a wrong one.

He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have.

Think not those faithful who praise all thy words and actions; but those who kindly reprove thy faults.

True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us.

I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think.

Our prayers should be for blessings in general, for God knows best what is good for us.

By all means marry. If you get a good wife you will become happy, and if you get a bad one you will become a philosopher.

Worthless people love only to eat and drink; people of worth eat and drink only to live.

The envious person grows lean with the fatness of their neighbor.
