SC demands for files of cases relating to murder accused Alam

Kathmandu: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an order demanding files of the case relating to suspended lawmaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) and former minister Aftab Alam, who is in a judicial custody on charges of burning people to death by putting them in a burning brick kiln.

A singe bench of Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma demanded reports from the Rautahat District Court and High Court, Birgunj to send Alam to the judicial custody.

The district court has been asked to provide explanations along with the basis and reasons for sending Alam to the judicial custody. The direction responded to the filing of an application in the apex court by Alam on September 16 demanding for his release citing COVID-19 infection risks in the jail.

In November 2019, the district court had issued an order to send Alam to the judicial custody on the same charge. Likewise, the High Court, Birgunj, approved the district court’s order on February 7, 2020. The government attorney’s office, Rautahat has filed a case demanding Alam to be in jail for 45 years on various charges including this one.
