Writ filed for release of prisoners from overcrowded prisons

A writ petition has been filed in the Supreme Court today demanding an order to release prisoners in the overcrowded prison, considering the chances of contracting COVID-19.

Gopal Siwakoti, Ram Sharma, Man Bahadur Rawat, Him Bahadur Rana, Badri Kumar Thapa, Om Prakash Poudel and Prakash Ojha have jointly registered the writ drawing the attention of the apex court towards the accommodating of more inmates than the actual capacity of the jails in many places in the country.

They have demanded with the SC to order the concerned authority to provide the elderly the state facilities, release of the inmates remanded in custody on bail and provide amnesty as per the constitutional provisions.
